In the name of Allah, and all praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, thereafter:
Muslim narrated in his Sahih:
47 – (869) Suraij bin Yunus narrated to me: Abdul-Rahman bin Abdul-Malik bin Abjar narrated to us, from his father, from Wasil bin Hayyan, who said:
Abu Wa’il said: “Ammar delivered a sermon to us, and he was concise and eloquent. When he descended (from the pulpit), we said: O Abu Al-Yaqzan! You have been eloquent and concise. If only you had elaborated a bit more!” He replied: “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: The length of a man’s prayer and the brevity of his sermon is a sign of his understanding. So, lengthen the prayer and shorten the sermon. Indeed, some eloquence is as effective as magic.” |
Someone said: This authentic hadith ends with a mawqoof statement from ‘Ammar.
Upon researching the words of scholars, I found no one prior to him making such a claim. I said: Perhaps he confused it with Al-Daraqutni’s words in “Al-‘Ilal” when he commented on the hadith being mawqoof on Abdullah ibn Mas’ood. We shall return to this point.
Verification of the hadith:
After the verification, it becomes clear that it is narrated from Shaqiq by two companions: from ‘Ammar as marfoo’ (attributed to the Prophet) and from Ibn Mas’ood as mawqoof (stopped at the companion).
As for the narration from Ibn Mas’ood, it was narrated by Al-A’mash from Abu Wa’il, and three trustworthy narrators transmitted it, making it authentic.
As for the hadith of ‘Ammar, it was narrated by Wasil from Abu Wa’il, then by Ibn Abjar from his father, which is a sound chain of transmission. We also found corroborating evidence in the form of the story mentioning ‘Ammar by both his title and name. We did not find anything similar elsewhere to suggest that this was a mistake or confusion by the narrator. Additionally, the hadith of Abu Rashid about ‘Ammar supports this, and it has a reliable chain.
For this reason, Al-Daraqutni said: “Both statements from Abu Wa’il are preserved, both the narration of Al-A’mash and the narration of Wasil.” [Al-‘Ilal by Al-Daraqutni (5/224)]
And Allah knows best.
